Other than music, two of the things that excites me the most are black people and love. These two topics, in their most positive forms, energize me almost as much as music. So, when I decided to do this season’s Transcending Sound playlist, I wanted to make sure that the music reflected love, black excellence, resilience, and black pride and joy through the work of black music creatives.

There’s not a lot of turning up on this playlist — the mellow side of my music taste shine on this one. These sounds are mostly R&B, but there is jazz, some hip-hop, and soul in the vibe. Reminiscent grooves from 20 years ago mingle with the sounds of the future. It’s a chill one, so relax with this one. Don’t worry — there’s brief moments of upbeat music in-between the slow joints.
